I’m sure Rachel wouldn’t mind chocolate, but that’s not the only problem with Valentine’s Day. It’s great to fall in love. It’s great to have that feeling of, Wow, she appreciates me for who I am, and I appreciate her too. The whole being in love thing, the whole stomach-going-crazy thing, all of that is great. The problem is staying in love. That’s the tricky part. That’s why Juan Gabriel’s “Costumbres” was a hit. He suggested that love was nothing more than habit, that we got used to people and stayed with them out of inertia. That’s hardly a romantic picture.
What is this love thing then? Is it sharing an ice cream cone in Dunlaoghaire? A beer in Dublin? A walk in Neuchâtel?
These three couples look pretty happy. But what will they do if, Heaven forbid, they fall out of love?
